Questions tag are used when asking for agreement or confirmation.

A negative statement + A positive question tag
  • Charles isn't from England, is he?
  • Cristine can't speak Germany, can she?

A positive statement + A negative question tag
  • Charles is from England, isn't he?

  • Sol can speak Germany, can't she? ---> Negative auxiliaries and verbs in tags are in contracted form


EXCEPTIONS

Some verbs / expressions have different question tags. For example:

  • I am - I am smart, aren't I?
  • Let's - Let's go to the cinema, shall we?
  • Have got (possession) - She has got a house, hasn't she?
